weight and performance calculations for the Ansaldo S.V.A.5
Ansaldo S.V.A.5
role : light bomber
importance : ****
first flight : 3 March 1917 operational : February 1918
country : Italy
design : Umberto Savoia & Rudolfo Verduzio
production : 1245 aircraft
general information :
Good speed and climb, but not as agile as the Hanriot HD.1. Because of it good range it was employed as long range reconnaissance and light bomber. On 21 may 1918 two pilots of 87th Squadriglia “La Serenissima” flew all the way to Friedrichshafen and returned with photographs of the Zeppelin works a roundtrip of 708 km. It was also used for bombing raids on Zagreb, Bolzano and Innsbruck. On 09 august 1918 the Italian poet d’Annunzio, flew as passenger in a two-seat version to Vienna, escorted by 7 single seaters, a round trip of 1006 km ! They dropped leaflets over the capital.
Vclimb : 5.19 m/s > 12 min 50 sec to 4000m
S.V.A.4 > first production version with 75 gallons (= 341 litre) patrol capacity, endurance : 3 hrs> Probably the S.V.A.5 had the same amount of fuel.
For reconnaissance flights the 2nd machine gun could be omitted and a reconnaissance camera was installed.
The Warren truss interplane struts eliminated the need for spanwise-exposed flying and landingwires !
